Parents and Swimmers,

Welcome to Prospect High School Swimming and Diving. Herein you will find the rules and expectations for being a member of the girls’ swim and dive team at Prospect High School. If there are any questions pertaining to either the rules of participation of the expectations of the student-athlete please feel free to contact a member of the coaching staff.

Prospect High School Swim Team Rules

Participation on Prospect Swimming and Diving is a privilege. Any violation of the Prospect High School Athletic Code or rules set forth herein may result in removal from the swimming or diving team. The rules and/or policies of the team are listed below.

1.     Attendance at all scheduled practices is required as part of team membership. Exceptions to the rule will be granted when a swimmer notifies the coach of her absence in advance AND the coach excuses the swimmer from the scheduled practice(s). Note that if a swimmer is healthy enough to attend school then she should be healthy enough to attend practice. Practice is critical to our improvement as swimmers and as a team.

2.     All swimmers will be to practice and in the pool on time. Swimmers should be in the pool and warming-up when practice has started.

3.     There will be a 90% attendance rule that will be in effect. In order to participate in meets you must be in attendance at 90% of all workouts. Being tardy will count as a loss of 5% to 50% of the practice attendance for that day, depending upon how late you are to practice.

4.     If you reach a point where you have missed 80% or more of scheduled practices during a week time period you will be subject to the following 3 Strike Policy.

·      1st time you will be warned

·      2nd time your parents will be contacted

·      3rd time you will be dismissed from the team

5.     Academic help will not count as tardy if the athlete comes to work out with a signed pass by the teacher – time listed.

6.     Participation at all meets that you are listed to swim in is required. There are exceptions, but you must discuss this with the coaching staff in advance. Failure to attend a meet without prior notification can result in severe penalties.

7.     Dress codes for away meets will be some combination of dress shirt/dress pants/skirts for girls. When we travel we represent our school and our program, so we will be presentable. The captains will determine appropriate attire for our home meets.

8.     Athletes must go to away meets on the bus and return on the bus to Prospect. Exceptions will be made for special occasions with prior notice (note) or family emergencies. It is important for all swimmers and divers to travel with the team to and from meets as it builds team unity and allows the coaches to address the team after a meet. Athletes must travel with their parents if they are not traveling back with the team to Prospect. *Note that there is no bus back to Prospect High School after home meets.*

Suits and Equipment

As a member of Prospect High School Swimming and Diving you will be expected to show up to practice prepared. That means goggles, suit, towel and water bottle. Water bottles should be filled prior to warm-up. It is my recommendation that you bring/have two sets of each item (besides the water bottle) to practice. Should you have something break it will not affect your ability to continue with practice. Dehydration is a detriment to your ability to maximize your work-outs and can lead to injury. Team suit and a set of goggles are mandatory for competition. Other items of clothing such as spirit wear and/or equipment will be available for purchase at the beginning of the season.

Practices

As a team we will practice after school at Wheeling High School. Times will vary from week to week, so please keep a copy of our practice schedule updated should there be any changes throughout the season. Morning practices are not mandatory for all swimmers, but are expected for varsity swimmers and open to all others that want to participate. All paper forms will be available for download and viewing online (www.knightsswimming.com). There will be a practice bus available before and after every practice except for on Saturdays. Not having a ride to practice is not an excuse. The bus will leave from the field house foyer and return after practice to the field house foyer.

Meets/Lineups

Lineups will be determined by the coaching staff. Frosh/Soph is a learning level and will be treated that way. At the varsity level we expect to win, so coaches will put in best lineup based on current times. Practice habits and attitude will also be a determining factor in the coaches’ decisions.

While at meets athletes should be either supporting their teammates or preparing for their event. Athletes are not allowed in the stands or to wander through the various parts of the school. Be on the pool deck and be prepared for the meet. On days that we have a home meet swimmers that are not participating in the meet are expected to help with timing and or any other duties needed by the coaching staff.

The bus to an away meet will not wait for athletes that are tardy – so be prepared to depart for our away meets on time. However, we do take roll on the bus as we leave schools, so if an athlete has not notified one of the coaches that they were not going to be coming back on the bus prior to the meet than we will contact the parents of the swimmer and if need be so the police. *Leaving a meet without permission can result in dismissal from the team.*
